Vietnam’s Maria Theresa: The ideal 12-hour stopover in Tokyo

12-hour

Introduction

Layovers can be a long, gruelling wait or an exciting adventure — it depends on how you use your time.

In the case of me and a companion we had a 12-hour layover at the Tokyo’s Haneda Airport (Terminal 3) transformed into a memorable trip because of Japan Travel Assist.

We were returning to Australia to study after spending time with our family members during our time in Vietnam during the Christmas season. We had initially booked a layover trip with another travel agency and, when we touched down, they suddenly changed their plans on us. With no plans and a short duration, we found ourselves in a bind for how to resolve the issue.

We were able to find Japan Travel Assist, a company that was able to respond quickly and efficiently. They planned a 10-hour excursion for us very last minute, geared to our needs. We wanted to see Tokyo’s most renowned temples and eat fresh sushi and soak in the hot springs of a Japanese hot spring. They created it all.

1. The Unexpected Setback: Our First Tour Was Canceled

When we first planned our layover we were certain that we wanted to visit Tokyo in lieu of sitting at the airport. To help make it simpler, my friend booked the layover tour ahead of time with a different company. Everything was perfect until we arrived.

When we landed to Haneda Airport, we received an unexpected message:

“We are sorry to announce that we’re unable to go on your trip.”

No explanation. No alternative solution. A sudden and unexpected cancellation.

We shook our heads for a second. We just arrived, were short on time and were unsure how we could explore Tokyo by ourselves.

Should we simply remain on the runway? Do we need to try booking taxis?

However, instead of not giving up, we swiftly found a new company who could offer a tour on this little notice.

2. Finding Japan Travel Assist: A Lifesaver in Tokyo

This is when we discovered Japan Travel Assist online. They specialize in last-minute layovers, and their response was incredible fast.

Within minutes of getting in touch after contacting them, they responded within a few minutes in English they confirmed a 10 hour tour, and then sent us an exclusive vehicle with a driver to pick us up at Haneda Airport.

It was a great relief to know that instead having to wait at an airport for hours, we were ready to explore Tokyo precisely as we had envisioned.

3. Our Customized Tokyo Itinerary

We informed Japan Travel Assist exactly what we required:

Visit the famous temples (especially Asakusa and Naritasan)

Enjoy fresh sushi at one of the local restaurants

Enjoy an Japanese onsen (hot spring)

They did it smoothly, with no waste of time or anxiety.

1. Visiting the Historic Temples of Tokyo

Tokyo Layover Tour Haneda Narita

Our first destination was Asakusa where we found The famous Senso-ji Temple (Qian Cao Si ) The oldest Buddhist Temple in Tokyo.

When we entered The Kaminarimon Gate (Thunder Gate) We saw the huge red lantern, which symbolized the gate that led to Senso-ji. The atmosphere was lively and filled with locals, tourists, and the scent of incense.

In the temple We:

* Washed our hands in the fountain for purification.

* wished by tossing a coin over the altar.

* We shook an Omikuji (fortune-telling paper)–thankfully we had luck!

After Asakusa we decided to explore a different spiritual place and our guide recommended Naritasan Shinshoji Temple (Cheng Tian Shan Xin Sheng Si ).

This temple, situated closer to Narita it is an undiscovered treasure with beautiful architecture and a serene environment. In contrast to the bustling Asakusa Naritasan, Naritasan felt more peaceful, ideal for contemplating and soaking in all the splendor of Japanese spirituality.

2. Enjoying Authentic Japanese Sushi Tokyo Layover Tour Haneda Narita

After touring the temples we became hungry. And what more perfect meal to enjoy during a trip to Japan then sushi?

Our guide led us to a classic Sushi restaurant. We ate:

* Otoro (Da toro) A fatty tuna extremely soft and delicious.

*Uni (uni) Sea urchin, soft and full of flavor.

*Ebi (ebi) Fresh and sweet shrimp that is freshly cooked and tasty.

The sushi was different from any sushi we’ve ever had before. It was so fresh, it almost melts in your mouth.

3. Relaxing in a Japanese Onsen

After wandering around Tokyo throughout the morning, we were ready to relax before returning towards the airport.

We inquired about whether there was a possibility of visiting an Onsen (hot spring) And, once more, Japan Travel Assist made it happen.

They led us to an authentic Japanese onsen and we were able to:

* Soak in mineral-rich hot water to help ease the fatigue of travel.

* We enjoyed the peace and quiet far from the bustling city.

*Experiencing Japanese bathing culture, which we’d never heard of before.

After a relaxing hour in the hot springs we were completely reenergized and eager for our next trip.

4. Returning to Haneda Airport – Stress-Free & On Time

After a wonderful 10-hour experience We had to travel home to Haneda Airport. Our guide ensured we were on time and the journey back was easy and comfortable.

While we sat in our car, we thought about how the layover could have turned out differently. Had we accepted that the initial company’s decision to cancel as bad luck, we could be trapped at the airport, missing an unforgettable trip.

Instead, we:

We explored Tokyo’s most famous temples

Had a wonderful sushi meal

Relax in a hot natural spring
